Postal services, regardless of whether in the past or in the present era, remain an indispensable and essential part of society's operation.

gam1 ci3 ngo5 dei6 zau6 lei4 tai2 haa5 hoeng1 gong2 gei2 doi6 jau4 zing3 zung2 guk6 ge3 bin3 cin1
This time, we will look at the changes Hong Kong's General Post Office underwent over several generations.

hoeng1 gong2 jat1 baat3 sei3 jat1 nin4 hoi1 fau6
Hong Kong was established as a port in 1841.

tung4 jat1 nin4 dai6 jat1 gaan1 jau4 zing3 guk6 lok6 sing4
In the same year, the first post office was completed.

It was built on the hillside above St. John's Cathedral and was just a small hut.

Soon, only five years later, the post office was relocated down the hill to the junction of Pedder Street and Queen's Road.

This two-story General Post Office building was in use for 65 years until the completion and opening of the third generation General Post Office in 1911.

ni1 gaan1 san1 ge3 jau4 zing3 zung2 guk6 zo6 lok6 hai2 bat1 daa2 gaai1 tung4 gon1 nok6 dou6 gaau1 gaai3
This new General Post Office building was located at the junction of Pedder Street and Connaught Road.

dong1 si4 deoi3 ceot1 zau6 hai6 buk1 gung1 maa5 tau4
At that time, Blake Pier was just opposite.

sei3 zau1 wai4 jau5 do1 tiu4 gaau1 tung1 gon3 dou6
The surrounding area had many major roads.

gei3 fong1 bin6 si5 man4, jik6 sap6 fan1 sik1 hap6 zeon3 hang4 jau4 zing3 jip6 mou6
It was convenient for citizens and very suitable for postal operations.

ni1 zo6 gin3 zuk1 coi2 jung6 wai4 do1 lei6 aa3 si4 kei4 go1 dak1 sik1 gin3 zuk1 fung1 gaak3
This building adopted the Victorian Gothic architectural style.

dong1 si4 wai4 zo2 dat6 hin2 gung1 gung6 gin3 cit3 ge3 gou1 kwai1 gaak3, syun2 ceoi2 gaau3 wai4 ngong4 gwai3 ge3 faa1 gong1 ngaam4 zok3 wai4 zyu2 jiu3 lap6 min6
At that time, in order to highlight the high standard of public construction, relatively expensive granite was chosen for the main facade.

tung4 si4 ceoi2 jung6 gwong2 dung1 hung4 zyun1, haa6 mun4 zyun1, cai3 sing4 gaan1 tiu2 tou4 ngon3, jing4 sing4 sin1 ming4 ji4 duk6 dak6 ge3 haau6 gwo2, mei5 leon4 mei5 wun6
At the same time, Guangdong red bricks and Xiamen bricks were used to form a striped pattern, creating a striking and distinctive effect, which was very splendid.

The third-generation General Post Office, as a landmark in Central, witnessed Hong Kong's turbulent changes until after the war, when Hong Kong's population surged and its economy also rapidly developed.

The government had already sought land to build a new building as early as the 1960s, but in the 1970s, encountering the MTR construction boom, for the construction of Central Station, the authorities ultimately demolished this magnificent post office in 1976, and the original site became today's World-Wide House.

The fourth-generation General Post Office stands on Connaught Place which was built after reclamation.

It adopted a modernist style, focusing on practicality and simplicity, forming a representative style of post-war public buildings, along with the then Star Ferry Pier, Queen's Pier, the West Block of the Old Central District Government Offices, and the City Hall.

zi3 gam1 jat1 gung6 fuk6 mou6 si5 man4 ciu1 gwo3 sei3 sap6 nin4
It has served the public for more than forty years, up until now.

However, in 2017, the government proposed a plan to relocate the General Post Office to Kowloon Bay, so the current building will face demolition and the land will be for commercial use.
