Dialogue
gam1 jat6 tung4 siu2 pang4 jau5 gong2 ge3 gu3 si6 hai6 "nin4 sau3 loi4 liu5"
The story I'm telling the children today is called "The Arrival of the Nian beast."
soeng1 cyun4, zung1 gwok3 gu2 si4 hau6 jau5 jat1 zung2 giu3 zou6 "nin4" ge3 gwaai3 sau3
Legend says that in ancient China, there was a monster called "Nian".
keoi5 tau4 zoeng2 zyu6 zuk1 gok3, hung1 maang5 ji6 soeng4
It had long antennae on its head and was extremely ferocious.
"nin4" zyu6 hai2 hoi2 dai2, mui5 dou3 ceoi4 zik6 zau6 wui5 paa4 soeng5 ngon6 tan1 sik6 ngau4 joeng4, soeng1 hoi6 jan4 meng6
"Nian" lived at the bottom of the sea, and every Lunar New Year's Eve, it would climb ashore to devour livestock and harm people.
so2 ji5, mui5 dou3 ceoi4 zik6 ni1 jat1 jat6, jan4 mun4 dou1 wui5 fu4 lou5 kwai4 jau3 gam2 joeng2 tou4 heoi3 sam1 saan1, do2 bei6 nin4 sau3 ge3 soeng1 hoi6
Therefore, every Lunar New Year's Eve, people would help the old and the young escape to the deep mountains to avoid being harmed by the Nian monster.
ni1 jat1 nin4 ge3 ceoi4 zik6, tou4 faa1 cyun1 ge3 jan4 zing3 hai2 dou6 soeng5 saan1 bei6 naan6
On this New Year's Eve, the people of Peach Blossom Village were heading up the mountain to take refuge.
ni1 go3 si4 hau6 hai2 cyun1 ngoi6 bin1 lei4 zo2 jat1 wai2 hat1 koi3 lou5 baak3 baak3
At this time, an old beggar arrived from outside the village.

The villagers were busy packing their belongings, leading their cattle, and herding their sheep, so the scene was chaotic.
lou5 baak3 baak3 man6: "faat3 saang1 me1 si6?"
The old man asked, "What's happening?"
cyun1 man4 zi2 hai6 cung1 cung1 gam2 daap3 keoi5: "jau5 nin4 sau3 lei4 gan2 aa1", zau6 zau2 zo2 laak3
The villagers hurriedly replied, "The Nian monster is coming!" and then left.

Later, the old man encountered an old woman who was very kind and told him that she still had food at home.
lou5 baak3 baak3 ho2 ji5 sin1 sik6 baau2, jin4 hau6 zoi3 soeng5 saan1 do2 bei6 "nin4" sau3
She said the old man could eat his fill first and then go up the mountain to avoid the "Nian" monster.
lou5 baak3 baak3 siu3 siu3 hau2 gam2 waa6: "po4 po2, jyu4 gwo2 nei5 bei2 ngo5 hai2 nei5 nguk1 kei5 dou6, lau4 suk1 jat1 maan5, ngo5 jat1 ding6 wui5 zoeng1 'nin4' sau3 gon2 zau2 gaa3!"
The old man smiled and said, "Granny, if you let me stay at your house for one night, I will definitely drive the Nian beast away!"
po4 po2 soeng2 gai3 zuk6 hyun3 keoi5, daan6 baak3 baak3 gin1 ci4
The old woman wanted to continue to try persuading him, but the old man insisted.
po4 po2 mou4 noi6 zi2 ho2 ji5 duk6 zi6 soeng5 saan1 heoi3 bei6 naan6 laa1
Helpless, the old woman could only go up the mountain to take refuge alone.

After the old beggar finished eating and rested for a while, he began to paste red paper on the old woman's house and light candles.

In the middle of the night, the Nian beast broke into the village!

The house was brightly lit with candles.
jyun5 cyu3 zung6 cyun4 lei4 "pek3 pek3 paak1 paak1" ge3 zaa3 hoeng2 seng1
In the distance, the crackling sounds of exploding firecrackers could be heard.
"nin4" hou2 geng1! zung6 haak3 dou3 haam3, m4 gam2 zoi3 hoeng3 cin4 hang4
The Nian beast was terrified! It was so scared that it cried and dared not move forward.
jyun4 loi4 "nin4" zeoi3 paa3 zau6 hai6 hung4 sik1, fo2 gwong1, tung4 maai4 zaa3 hoeng2
It turned out that the Nian beast was most afraid of the colour red, firelight, and the sound of firecrackers.

And, just like that, the Nian beast fled in confusion.
